My father,John, passed away on September 27, 2009. I did not learn about this project until after his passing, but my brother told me he was very "proud" to be included in this project. The brotherhood of our armed forces withstands time and space and was something my dad relied on for comfort and support, especially during his final years. Thanks to all who have served and to all those who honor our Vets. ~Kathie Gillet.
John Thamm is a portrait artist and resides in Spokane, Washington, United States with his wife, Kathy. He created a show and book titled: "50 Portraits of Veterans and Their Stories." Go to his blogsite to view the book and paintings.
Farbi Flora hosted a week long Portrait Masterclass workshop with John Thamm from April 30-May 4, 2012. www.farbiflora.de. The workshop took place on the beautiful estate-Gut Burig about 30 minutes from Berlin, Germany. The students, both artists and teachers, came from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium--a rich diversity of language and culture.
It was an honor for John to be able to teach this workshop and offer his techniques that included: learning to map the human head; layering oil paint to create the darks; creating the highlights by "Wiping Out" the paint with a rag; and adding color to complete the flesh tones, hair and clothing.
By day four the students were producing a portrait from a photograph of themselves, loved ones and some famous celebrities.
Enjoy the photos documenting this week-long class and be sure to check with Farbi Flora for more classes in the future.
